Sometimes I think “Man, the ONLY way to watch a TV show is from the very beginning!”

And then I remember that Guiding Light lasted for 72 years, from 1937 to 2009, and had a total of 18,262 episodes, counting the 15 years that it was a radio show, and I think, “y’know, maybe that isn’t always the best option.”

I was looking to see when the next episode of Gravity Falls would be out, and it is inexplicably scheduled for the end of June, more than a year since the series premiered.

I know that Gravity Falls might not be the best example, since it was renewed for a second season (yay!), but still. It’s a little ridiculous that it is taking over a year to release 21 episodes. Sporadically.

If you want people to watch your show, you have to make it a habit. You have to show it the same time on a regular schedule — generally once a week!

I don’t mind mid-season breaks. That gives networks the chance to kind of flip-flop their programming and try new things, before resuming the season and continuing to show it on a regular basis.

But how dare a network look at the ratings numbers on children’s cartoons that they aren’t even showing on a regular basis, or with lengthy, unannounced/last minute hiatuses, and say, “Well. We can definitely cancel that — no one’s watching it!”

Because you haven’t even given them the chance.

You can’t expect children, who have far less control of the programs they view (in general), and definitely have a shorter attention span than adults, to remember to watch a show that isn’t part of a regular rotation. Adults have a hard enough time remembering to watch shows they like, let alone kids.

Probably one of the most accurate general statements about children is that they like routine. And they like it a lot. They get confused when their routines are upset, and if it’s upset often enough, they will make a new routine, and exclude the unpredictable element (if possible). Which might be the cartoon show you’re not really doing much to cement into a proper schedule.

Thiiiiiiiiiis.

And this isn’t a new thing. It’s always been done, and while adult shows have slowly wrested away from it, kids’ shows and networks pointed primarily towards kids have consistently dealt out this kind of crap.

Why? No clue. Is it executives consciously screwing around with creators to “teach them their place”? Do they think that having shows on at random times somehow helps popularity? Are they trying to build a brand based on the network rather than on individual shows? Whatever it is, it’s enormously counterproductive.

(Actually, I think they somehow think they’re getting “the most value” out of reruns by putting them where you’d expect a new episode. Except that, while that brings in more viewers in the short-term, it’s really frustrating to kids and will drive them off in the long-term.)

And this isn’t just the adult fan whining about things for kids; this was a recurring annoyance all throughout my childhood, from as soon as I was old enough to realize that things were supposed to come on at the same time every day. I’m basing this on how I felt growing up; nowadays, I can just download or stream. (Helpful reminder that having things come out when you say they come out also decreases piracy!)

My favourite thing about the Doctor Who wiki is how they scream “It’s not canon!!!!!” every time anyone mentions anything from the Faction Paradox books or audios, and how on the Faction Paradox wiki they scream “It’s not canon!!!!!” every time anyone mentions anything from TV’s Doctor Who TV show, leading to serious claims that the Sontarans in Faction Paradox are *totally different* from the Sontarans in Doctor Who.

Wait, how do you even fit “canon” and “Faction Paradox” in the same sentence without your head exploding?

Saying that people of color cannot show any visible blushing is a big fat myth that only proves how little people actually know about skin tones.

I have seen a lot of skin-tone palettes that includes dark skin, but it is very rarely put in use as examples. And many times I’ve found them to only appear monochrome, while darker skin tones are just as rich in tone variation as fair skin.

And just to be extra nice, I even added the basic colors I used in these two examples. A big protip is to start with the darkest tone as a base and then work to light tones. Use the highlights sparingly, they should not be large but more like small spots. Dark skin is more “reflective”, meaning small highlights pop out more than on lighter skin tones.

I made this set mainly for all the anime artists out there who probably would love to color more poc characters but don’t really know if it’d work out as kawaii as their usual stuff.
